Kigali International Airport is effectively a non-smoking airport for the general public. The only airside smoking option is a single enclosed cabin inside the RwandAir DreamMiles Lounge, and accessing it costs money unless you already have lounge access. There is no public landside smoking area reported by any source, and no free airside smoking zone exists.
Before Security
No designated landside or outdoor smoking area has been documented at KGL by any traveler report or official source. If you need to smoke before your flight, you would need to do so off airport property before entering the terminal. There is no confirmed spot inside the check-in hall or near the terminal entrance.
After Security
Airside, there is exactly one smoking cabin, located inside the RwandAir DreamMiles Lounge. To reach it, turn left after immigration and the duty-free shops. The cabin is a small, enclosed glass pod designed for one person at a time (signage inside reads "Safe for One Person"), with an ashtray and ventilation.
Access to the smoking cabin requires entry to either the DreamMiles Lounge or the adjacent NAS Pearl Lounge (roughly 25 meters away), as Pearl Lounge staff will direct you to the DreamMiles cabin. Both lounges operate 24/7.
Access is free for:
Business/First class passengers on any airline
Top-tier frequent flyer status holders on any airline
Priority Pass, Diners Club, and Lounge Key card holders
For everyone else, the walk-in fee at the Pearl Lounge is $40 USD / 40 EUR / 58,000 RWF (as of early 2025, up from $30 in earlier years). That fee covers up to 4 hours and grants access to the DreamMiles smoking cabin next door.
Smoking Cabin Details
The cabin is a curved, glass-walled pod, compact enough for one person at a time. It sits within the DreamMiles Lounge, which has city views and serves hot food and snacks. The NAS Pearl Lounge nearby has blinded windows but the same food and drink offering. Both are open around the clock.
One FlyerTalk report from November 2022 noted that the cabin was temporarily absent from the lounge, with staff instead escorting status passengers to a public cabin at no charge. By early 2025, the cabin was confirmed back in the DreamMiles Lounge as the sole airside smoking option.
Vaping Rules
No specific vaping policy for KGL has been documented in any available source. Rwanda has general tobacco control legislation, so treating vaping the same as smoking and using only the designated cabin is the safest approach.
Transit and Layovers
If you are transiting through Kigali and want to smoke, the same rules apply: you need lounge access or must pay the walk-in fee. There is no free public smoking zone airside, so budget the $40 fee into your layover plan if smoking is a priority.
