Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) does permit smoking, but only in designated areas. The main confirmed airside smoking room is on the first floor of the domestic terminal, and smoking anywhere else inside the terminal buildings is not allowed. Before Security
Smoking before security is permitted, but only in designated outdoor areas outside the terminal buildings. There are no confirmed indoor landside smoking rooms. If you arrive early and want a cigarette before checking in, head outside the terminal entrance and look for the designated outdoor smoking zone.
After Security
This is where it gets more useful for smokers:
Domestic departures: The official airport website confirms a smoking room on the first floor of the domestic terminal, inside the building. This is the most reliably documented airside option at JRO.
International departures: A traveler report from July 2019 (Holger) noted that check-in staff told him there is also a smoking room at international departures, though he personally only used the domestic one. The airport FAQ also references a smoking room at the departure lounge on the second floor, which may correspond to the international side. Treat the international smoking room as likely but not independently verified by a traveler who used it.
Vaping Rules
No specific vaping policy for JRO has been published by the airport or confirmed by traveler reports. The safest assumption is that vaping falls under the same rules as smoking: only permitted in the designated smoking room, not freely throughout the terminal.
Transit and Layovers
JRO is a relatively small airport with a single terminal building serving both domestic and international flights. If you have a layover and need to smoke, your best option is the domestic-side smoking room on the first floor.
