Smoking policy at Kuala Lumpur, Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL)
Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL), serving Malaysia's vibrant capital, maintains a somewhat complex but generally accommodating smoking policy for travelers. While smoking is strictly prohibited within the main terminal buildings, designated smoking areas are available both before and after security checkpoints across its two main terminals, KLIA (often referred to as KLIA1) and KLIA2. This means that smokers can find relief, but they must be diligent in locating these specific zones, as signage can sometimes be minimal or non-existent, particularly in KLIA2. The airport's approach balances the comfort of smokers with the health regulations for non-smokers, ensuring that designated areas are typically enclosed smoking rooms or outdoor zones away from general passenger traffic. For passengers departing from KLIA (Terminal 1), smoking options are available after security. In the Satellite Building, which is accessed via the aero train after immigration, there are two well-known smoking lounges on the Mezzanine Level (Level 2), one in the North Zone near Gate C11 and another in the South Zone towards Gate C30. These locations have been consistently reported as open, with an update from April 2022 confirming their availability. Additionally, travelers with access to the Malaysia Airlines (MAS) Golden Lounge in the Satellite Building will find a dedicated smoking room at the back of the lounge, offering a comfortable spot before a flight. For domestic travelers using the Contact Pier, a smoking area is conveniently located beside the "TWG Tea" shop. However, it's important to note that the International section of the Contact Pier and the main KLIA building itself do not offer any smoking facilities after security. Before security, smoking is generally restricted to designated outdoor areas outside the terminal entrances. KLIA2, the dedicated terminal for low-cost carriers, also provides smoking facilities, though some can be challenging to locate. Before security, a smoking area is available between Piers P and Q, often described as being behind a "little Asian store" or the "Noodles" shop, and also near the "Little Malaysia store." This area was confirmed as active as recently as September 2019. After security in KLIA2, an international departures smoking room is notoriously difficult to find; it's on Level 2, one level down from the main entry point between P and Q gates, requiring a specific route past a Starbucks and furniture store. Another smoking room is reported after security on the square between Piers P and Q, behind a "little Asian store," with an update from August 2025 indicating its continued existence. For domestic travelers at KLIA2, while there are no smoking areas inside after security, it is possible to exit the main door and find viewpoints where smoking is allowed on either side of the building, then re-enter. Always be prepared for a lack of clear signage and don't hesitate to ask airport staff, although some may not be aware of the more hidden locations. Travelers arriving in Malaysia should also be aware of the local cigarette rules. The duty-free allowance permits bringing in up to 200 cigarettes or 225 grams of tobacco without incurring import duties. It is mandatory to declare all tobacco products at customs upon arrival; failure to do so can lead to fines or confiscation. Exceeding the duty-free limit will subject you to import duties and taxes under the relevant Customs Duties and Sales Tax Orders. Furthermore, counterfeit cigarettes or tobacco products are strictly prohibited and carry severe penalties. Adhering to these regulations is crucial to avoid legal issues during your visit to Kuala Lumpur.
