Miami International Airport enforces a strict no-smoking rule inside all terminal buildings, in line with the Florida Clean Indoor Air Act and Miami-Dade County ordinances. The only airside smoking option is the TGI Friday's Open-Air Smoking Lounge in Concourse D, located between Gates D35 and D36. Outside of that one spot, your only other choices are designated curbside zones on the arrivals and departures levels, which require leaving the secure area entirely.
Before Security
Outdoor smoking areas are available on both the arrivals level (Level 1) and the departures level (Level 2), positioned across the street from the terminal buildings. Confirmed locations with signage include:
North Terminal (Concourse D): Curbside spots near doors 1, 2, 12, 15, 22, and 28 on the arrivals level.
Central Terminal (Concourses E, F, G): Designated zones on both the arrivals and departures levels outside the terminal.
South Terminal (Concourses H, J): Outdoor areas near exits on both levels.
All curbside smokers must stay at least 20 feet (about 6 meters) away from any terminal entrance or exit. Vaping and e-cigarettes are permitted only in these outdoor zones or inside the TGI Friday's lounge.
After Security
The sole airside smoking option is the TGI Friday's Open-Air Smoking Lounge, situated in the North Terminal between Gates D35 and D36 on the opposite side of the concourse from the main TGI Friday's restaurant. The space is an open-air atrium with no ceiling, umbrella-style shade structures, ceiling fans for ventilation, bar seating, and roughly 60 seats across 11 tables. A full food and drink menu is available. No entry fee is charged, though a January 2025 traveler report notes there is also a roped-off standing area where you can smoke without making a purchase.
Operating hours are reported as 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM by most sources, though earlier reports cited closing as early as 9:00-9:30 PM, so hours can vary. Confirm on arrival if you have a late flight.
Terminal Access and Connections
Concourse D is the North Terminal. Travelers departing from Concourses E through J should know that Terminal D and Terminal E are connected airside, so passengers already past security in Terminal E can walk to the D35/D36 lounge without re-screening. However, travelers in Concourses F, G, H, or J cannot reach Terminal D airside and would need to exit security and re-enter, which means extra time for re-screening.
Vaping Rules
E-cigarettes and vapes follow the same rules as cigarettes at MIA. They are banned inside all terminal buildings and are only permitted in the designated outdoor curbside zones or inside the TGI Friday's lounge airside.
Transit and Layovers
If you have a layover and your gate is in Concourse D or E, the TGI Friday's lounge is a practical option. If you are connecting through Concourses F through J and want to smoke, factor in the time to exit security, smoke curbside, and clear security again before your next flight.
Bottom Line
