Warnings & Caveats
Smoking in non-designated areas inside the terminal is strictly prohibited under Italian law and may result in fines. Vaping and electronic cigarettes are also banned in all enclosed areas of the terminal. The smoking area near Gate B1 (upstairs) is not marked on the official airport map, so look for posted signage.
Milan Bergamo (BGY) is one of the more smoker-friendly airports in Italy. Multiple designated smoking areas exist both before and after security, which is unusual for an Italian airport. The airport has a single terminal, so there's no confusion about which building to head to.
Before Security
Landside, smoking is only permitted in designated outdoor areas outside the terminal building. There are no indoor smoking rooms before security. Head outside through the main entrance doors and look for marked smoking zones near the terminal facade.
After Security
This is where BGY stands out. Multiple smoking areas are available airside, and they have been consistently reported by travelers over several years:
Near Gate A8: The most consistently reported location. After reconstruction work at some point, the area was relocated slightly. From security, go up the escalator, head straight, turn right at a cafe, then right again. The smoking area is immediately on your right. It is open-air, with no seating, but covered overhead.
Near Gate B1 / upstairs just after B1: A newer area reported as of October 2022. It is not shown on the official BGY airport map, so follow signage carefully. Located on the upper level near the B gates.
In the shopping area: A third smoking zone is marked on the terminal map in the central shopping concourse, visible on the posted floor plan between the A and B gate wings.
The terminal map (image 1) clearly shows two "SMOKING AREA" labels: one in the central shopping zone and one near the Gate A7/A8 side. Traveler reports from 2017 through 2022 consistently confirm at least two to three active airside smoking areas.
Vaping Rules
Italian law prohibits the use of electronic cigarettes in all enclosed public spaces, including airport terminals. Vaping is treated the same as smoking and is not permitted inside the terminal building. Use only the designated outdoor or open-air smoking zones.
Transit and Layovers
BGY is a single-terminal airport with no complex transit setup. If you have a layover, you can use the airside smoking areas without needing to exit and re-enter security, as long as you remain past the checkpoint.
Bottom Line
BGY offers genuine airside smoking options near Gates A8 and B1, plus a spot in the shopping area, making it one of the easier Italian airports for smokers. Just note that the areas are open-air with no seating, and vaping is banned throughout the terminal.
