Smoking policy at Nanning, Nanning Wuxu International Airport (NNG)
Warnings & Caveats
Airside smoking rooms have been locked in the past following airport reconstruction. Signs directing passengers to smoking areas may remain even when the rooms themselves are closed. Transit passengers who exit to smoke outside must re-enter through full security screening, which takes significant time.
Smoking at Nanning Wuxu International Airport (NNG) is a mixed picture that has changed considerably over the years. Designated outdoor areas outside the terminals are your most reliable option, while the airside situation is inconsistent and depends heavily on which terminal and gate area you're departing from.
Before Security
Landside smoking is straightforward. The airport has designated outdoor smoking zones outside the terminal buildings, clearly marked with blue "吸烟区 / Smoking Area" signs. Photos confirm at least one area near the bus/transport pickup zone on the departures level, with overhead canopy cover. These are open to anyone before check-in or after arriving.
Look for the blue "吸烟区" signs directing you left or toward the exterior as you approach the terminal entrance.
The areas are outdoors but partially sheltered by the terminal canopy structure.
No special access or ticket required.
After Security
This is where things get complicated. The airport went through a major reconstruction, and the situation has shifted multiple times:
Terminal 2, domestic departures: A traveler in May 2026 reported a smoking room at Gate 36. A separate February 2026 report from traveler Liam noted a smoking room next to the China Southern lounge, near Gates 5 and 6. Both reports suggest at least some airside rooms are currently open in the domestic area.
International departures: Liam also reported in December 2025 finding a very small smoking room at the far end of the international departures corridor. It was described as cramped but functional.
Historical context: As recently as 2019, all airside smoking rooms appeared to be locked following reconstruction, and photos from that period show glass-walled smoking cabins with notices posted on the doors and no access. Directional signs pointing to smoking areas still exist on the terminal ceiling but may not correspond to open facilities.
The bottom line on airside smoking is that conditions vary and change. Some rooms appear to have reopened by 2025-2026, but you cannot count on finding them open when you arrive.
Transit and Connecting Flights
If you have a connecting flight and need to smoke outside the terminal, you will need to exit through immigration, go outside, and then re-enter through security. This is time-consuming and not practical for short layovers. The airside smoking rooms, when open, are the only realistic option for transit passengers.
Vaping
No specific information about vaping rules at NNG is available from the sources. China has introduced restrictions on e-cigarettes in public spaces in recent years, so treat vaping the same as smoking and use only designated areas.
Bottom Line
Smoke outside before security if you want certainty. Airside options exist in Terminal 2 (domestic near Gates 5-6 and Gate 36, international at the far end of the departures hall) but their availability has been unreliable historically, so verify on arrival.
