Smoking policy at Hanoi, Noi Bai International Airport (HAN)
Warnings & Caveats
Vietnam has a national ban on e-cigarettes and vaping. Using a vape device anywhere in the airport (or anywhere in Vietnam) is illegal and subject to fines. Smoking is only permitted in designated smoking rooms airside and outside the terminal buildings landside. Smoking anywhere else inside the terminal is prohibited and can result in penalties.
Noi Bai International Airport is one of the more smoker-friendly airports in Southeast Asia, with dedicated enclosed smoking rooms in both terminals after security. Landside options are limited to outdoor areas outside the terminal buildings. The setup is practical and well-signed, though the exact number of open rooms can vary.
Before Security
Landside smoking is only permitted outside the terminal buildings. There are no designated indoor smoking areas in the public check-in or arrivals halls of either Terminal 1 or Terminal 2. If you need a smoke before heading through security, you'll need to step outside the terminal entrance.
Terminal 1 (Domestic): Step outside through the main entrance doors on the ground floor.
Terminal 2 (International): Same rule applies. Head back out through the main entrance on the ground floor before going through check-in.
After Security
Terminal 1 (Domestic) has the most straightforward setup. A traveler reported in June 2026 that there is a smoking room approximately 20 meters after the security checkpoint. An earlier 2023 report confirmed smoking areas on the ground floor level straight after security, specifically between gates 3 and 4, and also between gates 9 and 10.
Terminal 2 (International) has multiple smoking rooms airside. Confirmed locations include:
A smoking room near Gate 32
A smoking room near Gate 34
Smoking rooms at Gate 22 and Gate 24 (confirmed November 2023)
These are enclosed glass-walled cabins with ventilation ports, clearly signed as "Phong Hut Thuoc / Smoking Room" in both Vietnamese and English. The rooms are visible from the main concourse and easy to find by following the blue directional signs.
Business Lounge with Smoking
The Vietnam Airlines Lotus Lounge in Terminal 2 (4th Floor, near Gate 28, open 24 hours) has a smoking area inside, according to a traveler report from August 2023. Access requires a Vietnam Airlines Business or First Class ticket, SkyTeam Business/First Class status, SkyTeam Elite Plus membership, or a pay-at-the-door fee. The Song Hong Business Lounge in Terminal 2 (4th Floor, near Gate 29, open 24 hours, walk-in from US$35) is another option, though a separate smoking room inside is not explicitly confirmed in the sources.
A lounge listed on the Mastercard Airport Lounge Finder (near Gates 21-22, 4th Floor East Wing, open 06:30-02:00) explicitly lists a "separate smoking room available" as a lounge policy.
Vaping Rules
Vietnam has a national ban on e-cigarettes and vaping products. Do not vape anywhere in the airport, landside or airside. Penalties apply.
Buying Cigarettes
You can buy cigarettes airside in Terminal 2 for approximately US$1.50 per pack, which is very cheap by international standards.
Bottom Line
This airport is genuinely convenient for smokers flying domestically or internationally, with multiple enclosed smoking rooms after security in both terminals. Just don't vape anywhere on the premises.
