Warnings & Caveats
Smoking in airport toilets will trigger fire alarms, resulting in a heavy fine and possible brief detention, which could cause you to miss your flight. Vaping indoors is subject to the same ban and the same smoke-detector enforcement as cigarettes. The former level 4 outdoor terrace is closed since November 2024 and is no longer accessible to the public. If exiting security to smoke, allow ample time to re-clear security, especially during peak summer periods.
Palma de Mallorca Airport (PMI) operates under Spain's strict indoor smoking ban, which means no smoking anywhere inside the terminal buildings. That said, there are real options both before and after security if you know where to look.
Before Security
Landside smoking is straightforward. You'll find designated outdoor areas just outside the departures building, with benches and ashtrays provided. Once you've checked your luggage, you can still step back outside for a smoke as long as you haven't yet passed through security.
Benches and ashtray stands are positioned directly outside the departures entrance.
After landing, step out of the arrivals hall and you're in a wide pedestrian area alongside the access road where smoking is permitted.
Note: the large outdoor terrace on level 4 that was once accessible to departing passengers closed in November 2024 when security control moved to level 2, so don't count on that spot.
After Security
This is where things get more complicated depending on which module your gate is in.
Module C (the reliable option): The only consistently confirmed airside smoking area is an outdoor terrace opposite Gate C42. Multiple traveler reports from 2023 through October 2025 confirm it remains open. To reach it, pass through the main Duty-Free zone, turn left, and follow the smoking area signs toward Module C. The terrace is clearly marked.
Module A: There was historically an outdoor smoking terrace near Gate A08 (also described as between Gate A11R and the passport e-gates). It was open in summer 2022 but was reported closed for renovations in April and June 2023. Its current status is uncertain, so treat it as unavailable until confirmed otherwise.
Module B: No smoking area. Never had one according to multiple reports.
Module D: No dedicated smoking area. However, the C42 terrace is only a 5-10 minute walk away. One traveler at Gate D94 confirmed it took 8 minutes to reach C42 in February 2020.
Non-Schengen Flights
If your flight departs from Module A (non-Schengen destinations), be aware that once you've passed through passport control into the non-Schengen zone, you cannot walk back to Module C to use the C42 terrace. Plan your smoke before passport control.
Vaping Rules
Vaping and e-cigarettes are subject to the same ban as traditional smoking inside the terminal. The same smoke detectors that would catch a cigarette will catch a vape. Do not attempt to vape indoors.
Transit and Layovers
You can exit the secure area and re-enter through security to smoke outside, and airport security staff are generally accommodating about this. However, factor in queue times at security, especially during peak summer months when PMI is extremely busy. For connecting flights, you may need to formally enter Spain to exit the terminal, which adds passport control to the equation.
Bottom Line
Smoke before security or head straight to the C42 terrace in Module C after security. If you're in Module A for a non-Schengen flight, smoke before passport control because you won't be able to reach C42 afterward.
