Smoking anywhere outside designated areas inside a Chinese airport can result in fines and enforcement action by airport security. Vaping regulations in China (since 2022) restrict non-tobacco-flavored e-cigarettes; bringing foreign vape products into China is restricted. The airside smoking area near gates 12-35 was confirmed by a traveler in July 2025 but was not present or not reported in 2023, so conditions may change.
Qingdao Jiaodong International Airport (TAO) follows mainland China's outdoor-only smoking rules, but with a notable twist: there is at least one enclosed smoking booth inside the terminal airside, in the gates 12-35 area after security, which sets it apart from the strict outdoor-only model at most other Chinese airports. For most travelers, the primary option before security is the designated outdoor smoking booth on the departures curbside.
Before Security
Outside the terminal building on the departures level, there is a glass-and-metal enclosed smoking booth clearly signed in both Chinese (吸烟室) and English as "Smoking Room." It sits under the terminal canopy near door 5 on the departures roadway, so you're sheltered from rain but still technically outdoors. The booth has seating inside and is free to use. This is the most straightforward option for anyone who hasn't yet cleared security.

After Security
This is where TAO is more interesting than most mainland Chinese airports. A July 2025 traveler report from Mathias (a regular China traveler) confirms there is a smoking area after the security check, before the gates 12-35 area. Image 2 shows what appears to be a signed "Smoking Room" entrance inside the terminal concourse, consistent with this report.
However, an earlier May 2023 update from traveler Theodoros noted that the old Liuting airport is gone and the new Jiaodong airport had no indoor smoking facilities at that time, directing smokers only to the outdoor booth. The 2025 report supersedes this, but conditions at Chinese airports can change. Treat the airside smoking room as likely available but worth confirming on arrival.
Transit and Layovers
If you need to smoke and are on a connecting flight, you can exit the secure zone, use the outdoor booth on the departures curbside, and then re-clear security. Budget at least 45-60 minutes for this at TAO given security queues. International transit passengers may need to pass through immigration before exiting, which adds time.
Vaping Rules
China has regulated e-cigarettes under a state monopoly since November 2022. Only tobacco-flavored vapes are legal; all other flavors are banned. At the airport, vaping is treated the same as smoking: use the designated outdoor booth or the airside smoking area only. Bringing non-Chinese vape products into the country is restricted.
