Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport (TPE) is one of the more smoker-friendly major hubs in Asia, with designated smoking rooms available both before and after security in both terminals. Smoking anywhere outside these designated areas is strictly prohibited and can result in significant fines under Taiwan's tobacco control laws.
Before Security
Landside, designated outdoor smoking areas are located outside the terminal buildings at both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. These spots are typically near the main entrances and exits, marked with clear signage. They are accessible to anyone, including those who have not yet checked in or who have just arrived.
After Security
This is where TPE genuinely stands out for a major international airport. Multiple enclosed smoking rooms are confirmed operational airside in both terminals as of early 2025.
Terminal 1 (airside):
The primary smoking room sits between Gates A8 and A9, in the departure restricted zone. A December 2025 traveler report describes it as very clean and well-maintained. It is also referenced as being accessible near Gates B8 and B9, suggesting a central position in the concourse.
A walkway connects Gate C1 in Terminal 2 to Gate B9 in Terminal 1, which may be useful for transit passengers needing to reach this room, though you should confirm re-entry rules with airport staff.
Terminal 2 (airside):
One smoking room is located after security: turn left heading toward the A/D gates and the room is visible on the right. A March 2025 traveler confirmed this location.
A second confirmed area is across from the Landseed Medical Clinic, next to the stairs leading up to the Plaza Premium Lounge. This was verified in January 2023 and remains one of the most consistently cited spots.
Two additional smoking areas have been reported near the food court elevators in Terminal 2, both confirmed operational as of October 2022.
Vaping Rules
No specific vaping policy is published for TPE. Given Taiwan's strict tobacco regulations, treat e-cigarettes and IQOS devices the same as traditional cigarettes and use them only inside the designated smoking rooms or outdoor areas. Do not vape in the general terminal.
Transit and Layovers
If you are transiting between terminals airside, the inter-terminal walkway between Gate C1 (T2) and Gate B9 (T1) may give you access to the Terminal 1 smoking room without clearing customs, but this depends on your routing. Confirm with airline or airport staff before attempting.
Bottom Line
TPE offers a genuinely solid setup for smokers, with clean, accessible smoking rooms after security in both terminals. Smoke landside before you go through if you want the easiest option, but you will not be left without a spot airside either.
