Smoking policy at Vienna, Vienna International Airport (VIE)

Smoking at Vienna International Airport

Vienna International Airport is still one of the easier European airports for smokers, although it is not as simple as saying “every terminal has a smoking room”. Smoking is not permitted inside the terminal buildings, restaurants, terraces, corridors, or gate areas, except in places with signs stating that they are dedicated smoking areas.

To smoke, the most important point at VIE is to know your gate area and go there first. While VIE does have several post-security smoking areas, they are not always closest to your gate and may have been closed or relocated.

Before Security

Smoking is otherwise limited to outdoors before security, outside the terminal buildings.

If you arrive early or want a cigarette before the main flow of the airport, this is the easiest option. Do not go outside if you have been through security, unless you have time to go through again.

After Security

Vienna Airport has several smoking rooms on both sides of security, especially around gates C, D, F and G. These are either free to access or part of lounges.

Vienna Lounge

One of the better options is the smoking terrace in the Vienna Lounge, which is after security and passport control and has a covered outdoor smoking terrace overlooking the runway.

It is small and usually less crowded, but is not a public lounge, so you would need lounge access or to pay to use it.

Gate C Area

There has been a public smoking room near Gate C past the Vienna Lounge, useful as it seems to be separate from the paid lounge terrace and therefore accessible to regular passengers.

For those departing from the C gates, follow the signage after the security check, beyond the Vienna Lounge area, as the space is clean and convenient.

Gate D Area

For Gate D passengers, there is reportedly a newer smoking room near the Natoo restaurant. You may have to step into the restaurant area to get to the smoking room.

This is helpful because while older sources show no smoking areas in the C and D areas, more recent sources show that there is a smoking area in the D area again.

Terminal 3 / Gate F Area

There are smoking booths or smoking cubes in front of or near the F gates for departing Schengen flights, near gates F32, F33, F34-F35, F37 and the area of the Austrian Airlines lounge.

They are simply public smoking areas, rather than clubs or lounges, and so are only of use if your flight departs from the F gates, otherwise feeling quite basic.

Terminal 3 / Gate G Area

For departures to non-Schengen countries, the G gates are still one of the better smoking areas.

There are apparently smoking rooms near G16 and G32, but only if your flight departs from the international gate area after passport control. Traveler reports indicate they are reasonably clean and well-ventilated rooms.

Closed-Off or Less Reliable Areas

Please note that older reports of restaurants having smoking sections may no longer be accurate as Austrian anti-smoking legislation is applied to restaurants and these sections may have been banned.

Some of this information is now out of date or at least incomplete, as there are smoking areas near Gate C and Gate D. Please follow the signs inside the airport on the day you're travelling for the most up-to-date information.

Vaping at VIE

Vaping is not clearly treated as separate from smoking among passengers, and the safe approach is to treat it effectively as smoking.

Do not vape in the terminal, at airport gates, in toilets, restaurants, lounges, shops, or any part of the terminal that is not a designated smoking area without staff permission.

Practical Advice

Vienna Airport is manageable for smokers, although you would be wise to check your gate area before wandering.

For C gates, the public smoking room is after the Vienna Lounge area. For D gates, it is after Natoo. Around the F gates, you can find smoking rooms near gates F32 to F37. Around the G gates, the best rooms are near gates G16 and G32. If you are looking for somewhere more comfortable and can find the time, the terrace of the Vienna Lounge is probably the best smoking area at the airport.

Smoking is permitted only in designated areas. Look for signs and allow time to get back to your gate.

Traveler updates note a smoking room near Gate C in October 2025, a Gate D room near Natoo in March-May 2025, smoking booths/cubes near F-gate throughout 2025, and smoking rooms near G16 and G32 multiple times throughout 2025. Another airport guide from 2026 also names F34/F35, G16/G32, and the terrace of the Vienna Lounge as smoking areas.
