Warnings & Caveats
Smoking is only permitted in designated outdoor areas before security. No confirmed airside smoking in Terminal 1 or Terminal 2. Vaping is treated as smoking; only tobacco-flavoured vapes are legal in China. Exiting and re-entering security for a smoke is only realistic on layovers of 3+ hours.
Wuhan Tianhe International Airport (WUH) has a split policy: smoking before security is restricted to designated outdoor areas only, while Terminal 3 offers a small number of glass-walled indoor smoking rooms in the domestic departure zone after security. If you are flying out of T3 domestically, you are in the best position of any smoker at this airport.
Before Security
Landside smoking is permitted only in designated outdoor zones near the terminal entrances and exits. There are no indoor smoking rooms in the public (pre-security) areas. Expect standard Chinese airport signage in both English and Chinese marking these spots. The outdoor areas are free to use but can get crowded during peak domestic travel periods.
After Security
The situation varies significantly by terminal:
Terminal 1: No confirmed smoking facilities after security. Information is currently unavailable, so assume no airside smoking is possible here.
Terminal 2: No confirmed smoking facilities after security. Same caveat applies.
Terminal 3: A few glass-walled smoking rooms are located in the domestic departure area and have been reported as still operating. This makes T3 notably more comfortable for smokers on domestic layovers. There is also a smoking room inside the China Southern Airlines lounge in T3, though access to that lounge requires a qualifying boarding pass or lounge membership.
Vaping Rules
China introduced a state monopoly on e-cigarettes in November 2022. Only tobacco-flavoured vapes are legal for sale; all other flavours are banned. At WUH, vaping is treated the same as smoking, so use the designated smoking areas. Bringing non-Chinese vape products into the country is restricted.
Transit and Layovers
If your layover is in T3 and you are on a domestic itinerary, the airside smoking rooms mean you do not need to exit security. For T1 or T2 transits, or for international connections, you would need to exit and re-clear security to smoke, which is only practical on layovers of three hours or more. Wuhan's climate is famously hot and humid in summer (the city is nicknamed a "furnace city"), so outdoor smoking in July and August is genuinely uncomfortable.
Bottom Line
T3 domestic passengers have the best deal, with a handful of glass-walled airside smoking rooms available. Everyone else should plan to smoke outside before clearing security.
