Hotels with smoking rooms: where they still exist in 2026

Smoking rooms are still easy to find in Japan, at a handful of Las Vegas casino resorts, at budget motels in the United States and at some hotels in Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok. They have nearly gone in London, Amsterdam and Singapore: in 2026 we found none we could verify in London or Singapore and one suite in Amsterdam. The sections below say how we checked, which chains still offer them, and how to filter or ask on Booking.com and Agoda.

Hotels with smoking rooms by city

Each page lists the hotels we could verify, the local rule and the fees hotels publish.

City by city

Japan and Hong Kong. Tokyo is the easiest big city: private guest rooms are exempt from Japan's indoor smoking ban, and we found 12 hotels, mostly business hotels near Haneda, Narita and Shinagawa. Osaka gave 14, four of them near Kansai Airport, though the label comes and goes with the dates you search. Hong Kong is the reverse. Only Prudential Hotel on Nathan Road sells a labelled room, and six more, such as Grand Hyatt (20th floor) and Gloucester Luk Kwok (26th floor), confirmed smoking rooms in replies to guests.

The United States. Las Vegas has 13 hotels, but at the large casino resorts the smoking floor is a request, not a room type: Treasure Island's 36th floor, Bellagio's 19th, certain ARIA Sky Suites. Westgate, Rio, The Venetian, MGM Grand and Mandalay Bay went non-smoking. New York is different again: ten budget hotels in Queens, the Bronx and New Jersey, and none in Manhattan.

Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. Bangkok has six, led by InterContinental's levels 23 and 24, with several listings that contradict the hotels. Kuala Lumpur has six too, but none can be booked by room type: Hilton Kuala Lumpur and DoubleTree's Level 30 state it on hilton.com. Singapore has none we could verify among about 145 hotels checked, and hotels there cite local regulations.

London and Amsterdam. London law still permits a designated smoking bedroom, but none of about 800 listings advertised one. Amsterdam yielded a single smoking suite at Hotel TwentySeven out of about 440, plus three hostels with a communal smoking room or area.

Which chains still offer smoking rooms

Smoking is decided hotel by hotel, not chain by chain. The one chain-wide pattern we could confirm is Japanese. Western and Asian international chains are mostly non-smoking and publish the answer per property. Samples are small and room lists change with dates.

ChainWhat we found
Toyoko Inn (Japan)27 of 28 properties sampled on Booking.com listed room types labelled Smoking; Haneda Airport No.2 did not
APA Hotel (Japan)7 of 35 sampled in Tokyo and Osaka; Shinjuku Kabukicho Tower lists only non-smoking types
MYSTAYS, New Otani, Prince (Japan)MYSTAYS 3 of 3 sampled, New Otani 2 of 2, Prince 1 of 5; Hotel New Otani Tokyo says a smoking or non-smoking room can be requested subject to availability
Hilton familyOn hilton.com, 3 of 57 hotels in Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan and Kuala Lumpur said “Smoking rooms available: Yes” (Hilton Kuala Lumpur, DoubleTree Kuala Lumpur, Kawana Hotel in Ito), 42 said No and 12 had no such line
Marriott, Hyatt, IHG, Accor in AsiaProperty by property and mostly non-smoking; a few keep a smoking floor, such as Grand Hyatt Hong Kong's 20th floor (hotel reply, Sep 2023)
Motel 6 (US)Set by each motel. The official Motel 6 Bristol, Virginia page lists room types labelled SMOKING and NON-SMOKING; a San Diego Motel 6 calls itself 100% smoke free on a third-party listing
Red Roof Inn (US)Per property: Red Roof Inn Atlanta-Norcross and Atlanta-Suwanee list smoking room types on Booking.com; others are fully non-smoking
Wyndham brands in the US (Days Inn, Travelodge, Super 8)Per franchise: smoking types at Super 8 Acworth, Travelodge Forest Park Atlanta South and several New York-area motels; none on the Las Vegas pages checked. Wyndham's Singapore and KLCC hotels are non-smoking

We did not search Choice Hotels, IHG or Best Western brand policies in the United States, so we make no claim about them. We also found no directory of “smoke-friendly” hotels that we could verify; the lists that exist online are unsourced and disagree with the hotels' own pages.

How to filter or ask on Booking.com and Agoda

Neither site has a smoking-room filter. On Booking.com the only smoking-related facility offered on the Tokyo results page was “Non-smoking rooms”. A “Designated smoking area” label on some hotel pages means a shared outdoor spot, not a room. On Agoda the property filters read “Non-smoking” and “Smoking area”, and neither finds a smoking room.

  1. Open the hotel's own page, set your dates and read the room table. Smoking rooms are separate room types with names like “Double Room - Smoking” or “Superior Twin Room (Smoking)”.
  2. Search two or three dates. A sold-out smoking type disappears from the table, so a missing label on one night proves nothing.
  3. On Booking.com, read the hotel's replies in the questions section. In Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore many hotels answer “do you have smoking rooms?” there, in their own words but with dates, some of them years old.
  4. On Agoda, use the “All room types” list. The special-request step offers “I want a non-smoking room” and nothing for smoking, so choose a labelled room type or email the hotel.
  5. Where no label exists, email and ask for written confirmation naming the room type, floor, dates and fee. Ask whether it can be cancelled if no smoking room is free, and keep the reply.

Even when a hotel confirms smoking rooms, they are usually “subject to availability on arrival” (Grand Hyatt Hong Kong, The Luxe Manor, The Ritz-Carlton Kuala Lumpur). hilton.com is the one major site that prints “Smoking rooms available: Yes/No” and the fee on every hotel page.

What hotels charge if you smoke in a non-smoking room

Hotels publish their own amounts; none is a legal maximum. Most Japanese and Hong Kong hotels say a fee may apply without giving a number. These are the figures we found.

HotelPublished charge
Wynn and Encore, Las VegasUp to $1,500
Rio, Las Vegas$500 cleaning fee for smoking or vaping
MGM Resorts, Las VegasMinimum $500 for rooms, $1,000 for suites
DoubleTree by Hilton Flagstaff, US$250 per incident, including e-cigarettes
Hilton Kuala LumpurRM1,000 cleaning fee
DoubleTree by Hilton Kuala LumpurRM500, for smoking outside the Level 30 smoking floor
Meliá Kuala LumpurMinimum RM1,000 where there is evidence of smoking
Pullman Bangkok Hotel GTHB 5,000, plus up to THB 10,000 for recovery
Solitaire Bangkok Sukhumvit 11THB 5,000 cleaning fee
The Warehouse Hotel, SingaporeSGD 250
Carlton Hotel SingaporeSGD 500 for damage, including smoking outside designated areas
Naumi Hotel, SingaporeSGD 200 for balcony smoking (hotel reply, Feb 2021)

Hotel New Otani Tokyo says cleaning costs may be billed without naming an amount. Charges go to the card you booked with, and several hotels, including OYO in Las Vegas and Le Méridien New York Central Park, have sensors in the rooms.

Smoking balconies

A balcony is almost never a loophole. Hotels that are non-smoking usually apply the rule to balconies and terraces. Hyatt Centric City Centre Kuala Lumpur, Conrad Singapore Orchard, Pan Pacific Orchard, M Social Singapore and Hotel 108 in Hong Kong all said so in writing, and Naumi in Singapore attaches a SGD 200 fee.

The exceptions we found are few. The Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas lets guests smoke on their own terrace, with the ashtray provided and the room door closed, but not inside the room. Ascott Kuala Lumpur said in May 2022 that apartment balconies are fine, and S8 Boutique Hotel near KLIA said yes to a guest in June 2023. Those are hotel replies on Booking.com, so confirm before you rely on them.

Both sites have a balcony filter (“Balcony” on Booking.com, “Balcony/terrace” on Agoda), but it only narrows to rooms with a balcony. Combine it with a Smoking room type, or ask whether the balcony counts. At Grand Hyatt Hong Kong the terrace room is non-smoking and the 20th floor is the smoking floor, per a hotel reply of November 2021.

Questions travellers ask

Which hotels have smoking rooms?

Smoking rooms are most common at Japanese business hotels (Toyoko Inn at 27 of 28 sampled properties), at some Las Vegas casino resorts such as Treasure Island and Bellagio, and at budget US motels. In London and Singapore we could not verify any, and Amsterdam has one suite.

How do I find a hotel with a smoking room on Booking.com?

There is no filter. Open the hotel page, read the room table and pick a room whose name contains Smoking rather than Non-Smoking. Check more than one date, because the type disappears when it is sold out.

Does Motel 6 have smoking rooms?

It depends on the motel. The official page for Motel 6 Bristol, Virginia lists room types labelled SMOKING and NON-SMOKING, while a San Diego Motel 6 describes itself as 100% smoke free. Check the specific property.

Can you smoke on a hotel balcony?

Usually not. Most non-smoking hotels apply their rule to balconies. The Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas allows smoking on a room's own terrace if the door is closed, and a few Kuala Lumpur hotels said yes to guests.

How much is the fee for smoking in a non-smoking hotel room?

Published amounts run from $250 per incident at DoubleTree Flagstaff to $500 at Rio and up to $1,500 at Wynn and Encore, RM500 to RM1,000 in Kuala Lumpur, SGD 200 to 500 in Singapore and THB 5,000 in Bangkok.

Are there hotels with smoking rooms in London?

We could not confirm any. English law allows a designated smoking bedroom, but none of about 800 London listings we read on Booking.com advertised one.
