Smoking policy at Nagoya, Chubu Centrair International Airport (NGO)

Warnings & Caveats

Smoking is prohibited everywhere outside the designated rooms, including outdoors and in the car park. Eating and drinking are not permitted inside the smoking rooms. Terminal 2 (LCC terminal) has no smoking rooms.

Chubu Centrair International Airport (NGO) is one of the most smoker-friendly airports in Asia. Terminal 1 has enclosed, well-ventilated smoking rooms both landside and airside, covering domestic and international areas across multiple floors. Smoking outside the designated rooms, including outdoors and in the car park, is strictly prohibited.

Before Security

Landside smoking rooms in Terminal 1 are on two floors:

  • 2F Domestic Arrivals lobby (on your left as you exit)

  • 2F International Arrivals lobby (on your right as you exit)

  • 3F opposite Domestic Check-In Counters O and P

  • 3F opposite International Check-In Counter B

All rooms are enclosed, clearly signed with the Japanese 喫煙室 (smoking room) symbol, and equipped with plug lighters (electric wall-mounted lighters). Eating and drinking inside the rooms is not permitted.

After Security

Airside smoking rooms are available in both the domestic and international departures areas of Terminal 1:

Domestic Departures (airside, 2F):

  • Opposite Gates 4-6

  • Opposite Gate 10

  • Gates 201-206 area (described by travelers as a spacious room with bench seating)

International Departures (airside, 2F):

  • Near Gate 7

  • Near Gate 17A

  • Near Gate 23

The domestic departures signage inside the terminal confirms smoking rooms near Gates 4 and 6. The Gates 201-206 room is notably larger and more comfortable than the others, with seating along the walls and views of the apron.

Terminal 2 (LCC Terminal)

Terminal 2, which opened in 2019 and handles low-cost carriers, has no documented smoking rooms. If you are departing from Terminal 2, use the smoking rooms in Terminal 1 before proceeding to T2 security.

Vaping and Heated Tobacco

Heated tobacco products such as IQOS, Ploom, and glo are permitted in the same smoking rooms as cigarettes. Standard nicotine e-cigarette liquids are not sold in Japan, so heated tobacco is the practical alternative for most travelers. Use the same designated rooms; vaping outside them is not allowed.

Transit and Layovers

If you are transiting through NGO, the airside smoking rooms in both domestic and international departures are accessible after security, so you do not need to exit and re-enter the secure zone to smoke during a layover.

Bottom Line

Centrair is genuinely excellent for smokers: clean, enclosed rooms are available both before and after security in Terminal 1, covering domestic and international areas. Just make sure you smoke in T1 before heading to the LCC terminal.
