Smoking policy at Chicago, Chicago O'Hare International Airport (ORD)
Warnings & Caveats
Smoking within 15 feet of any entrance, exit door, open window, or ventilation shaft is a violation of Illinois law and Chicago city ordinance. First-offense fines can reach $250; repeat violations carry higher penalties. Cannabis use is prohibited on all airport property under federal law, even though recreational marijuana is legal in Illinois. Vaping indoors or post-security is treated the same as cigarette smoking and subject to the same fines.
O'Hare is a fully smoke-free building. There are zero smoking options once you clear security, so your only realistic move is to smoke outside at the curb before you enter the terminal. The Smoke-Free Illinois Act and Chicago city ordinance together ban all indoor smoking and vaping across every terminal, concourse, lounge, and restroom at ORD.
Before Security
Designated outdoor smoking areas exist at the curbside of each terminal, marked with signage and fitted with ash receptacles. You must stay at least 15 feet from any entrance door, open window, or ventilation shaft to comply with Illinois law. Specific spots reported by travelers include:
Terminal 1 (United): Near doors 1A and 1E on the departures level; doors 1G and 1L on the arrivals level.
Terminal 2 (Alaska, Air Canada, Delta): Outside ticketing near door 2E (departures); outside baggage claim near door 2H (arrivals).
Terminal 3 (American Airlines): Far ends of the terminal near doors 3B and 3K (departures); near exits 3E and 3L (arrivals).
Terminal 5 (International): Outside doors 5B and 5L (departures); near taxi stand exits and shuttle pick-up zones (arrivals).
Ash receptacles are described as reasonably well-placed at these spots, so you should not have trouble finding where to stub out.
After Security
There is nothing for smokers airside. No smoking rooms, no smoking terraces, no exceptions. Every airline lounge at ORD, including the United Club, American Admirals Club, and Delta Sky Club, is fully smoke-free. Even outdoor terraces attached to lounges are non-smoking under city ordinance. No paid lounge access will get you a smoke once you are past TSA.
Vaping Rules
Vaping and e-cigarette use are treated identically to cigarette smoking. You may only vape in the same outdoor designated areas before security. Using a vape device indoors, in restrooms, or near boarding gates carries the same penalty as smoking a cigarette in those spaces.
Transit and Layovers
If you have a connection and need to smoke, you will have to exit the secure zone, walk to a curbside smoking area, and then re-clear TSA. Allow a minimum of 45 to 60 minutes for this, more during morning and evening peak hours. Terminals 1, 2, and 3 are connected airside, but that does not help you since none of them have post-security smoking. Terminal 5 is separate; passengers connecting through it must clear customs before they can access any outdoor area. One experienced traveler tip: the on-site Hilton O'Hare Hotel (reachable via the underground pedestrian walkway from any domestic terminal) has outdoor terraces open to non-guests, though food and drinks there are expensive. It is a workable option if you have checked-through bags and enough time.
Cannabis
Recreational marijuana is legal in Illinois but prohibited on all airport property under federal law. This includes every terminal, parking structure, and outdoor smoking zone. Violations can result in fines or referral to law enforcement.
Bottom Line
Smoke before you go through security, at the marked curbside zones outside whichever terminal you are departing from. Once you are airside, there is no option, paid or free, so plan accordingly.
