Smoking policy at Ishigaki, Painushima Ishigaki Airport (ISG)
Warnings & Caveats
Smoking outside designated areas is prohibited throughout the terminal building. Heated tobacco (IQOS, glo) and vaping devices must also be used only inside designated smoking rooms, not in general terminal areas.
Painushima Ishigaki Airport (ISG) follows standard Japanese airport rules: smoking is only permitted inside designated smoking areas, and lighting up anywhere else in the terminal will get you in trouble. The good news is that ISG covers all the key zones, with four designated spots spread across both the Domestic and International terminals.
Before Security
In the Domestic Terminal on the ground floor (1F), there are two outdoor smoking areas:
Domestic Terminal 1F, North side (outside) - a landside outdoor spot on the north end of the building, accessible before check-in or after arriving.
Domestic Terminal 1F, South side (outside) - a matching outdoor area on the south side of the same floor, also landside and open to anyone in the terminal.
Both of these are exterior areas, so you are outside the building proper. They are accessible without going through security, making them the most convenient option if you have time before check-in.
After Security
Once you clear security, there are enclosed smoking rooms in the departure waiting lounges of both terminals:
Domestic Terminal 2F, Departure Waiting Lounge - an enclosed smoking room (喫煙室) inside the airside departure lounge. The floor map confirms its position within the lounge area, past the security checkpoint on the second floor.
International Terminal 2F, Departure Waiting Lounge - a separate smoking room in the international departure lounge, located near the Departure Waiting Lounge area after passing through passport control and security. The floor map shows it positioned on the left side of the lounge, close to the boarding gate area.
Vaping Rules
Japan treats heated tobacco products (IQOS, glo, Ploom) and vaping devices the same as cigarettes at airports. You must use these inside the designated smoking rooms only, not in the general terminal areas.
Transit and Layovers
Ishigaki is a relatively compact airport with a single domestic terminal building and a separate international terminal. If you are connecting between a domestic and international flight, note that the two terminals are linked but have separate security and passport control processes. Plan to use the landside outdoor areas on 1F before going through international passport control, as re-entry after clearing outbound immigration is not possible.
Bottom Line
ISG has you covered both before and after security, with outdoor spots landside and enclosed rooms airside in both terminals. Use the 1F outdoor areas before check-in, and the 2F departure lounge rooms once you are through security.
