Smoking policy at Kunming, Kunming Changshui International Airport (KMG)
Warnings & Caveats
Smoking anywhere outside designated areas inside the terminal is prohibited under China's 2016 civil aviation indoor smoking ban. Enforcement is active at major hubs. Vaping is only legal in China with tobacco-flavoured, state-approved products. Non-Chinese vape devices and flavoured pods may be confiscated at customs.
Kunming Changshui is a large, busy hub and the situation for smokers is more nuanced than the standard mainland China picture. The general 2016 indoor smoking ban applies here, but the international terminal has at least one confirmed indoor smoking room after security, and directional signage throughout the domestic concourses points to multiple smoking lounges (吸烟室) on level 3F. Landside, your only option is stepping outside the terminal building.
Before Security
Landside smoking is outdoor-only. You'll need to exit the terminal building entirely and smoke in the designated curbside zones near the arrivals or departures levels. There are no indoor smoking areas before security. The airport sits at roughly 2,100 metres elevation, so the outdoor areas are generally comfortable in Kunming's famously mild climate, though it can be cool in winter.
After Security (Domestic Concourses)
Multiple smoking rooms are signed throughout the domestic gates area on level 3F. Directional signs photographed inside the terminal point to smoking lounges (吸烟室) in several locations:
Near Gate 18 area: A sign on level 3F points straight ahead to a smoking lounge, alongside food, retail, and toilets.
Gates 29-45 concourse: Signage directs left toward a smoking lounge and toilets, with First Class and Business Class Lounges V8, V9, and V10 in the same direction. A traveler report from 2019 confirmed at least one smoking room in this zone.
Near First Class Lounge V9: A separate directional sign on level 3F points downward toward a smoking lounge adjacent to the V9 lounge, in the gates 32-36 area.
Gates 46-63 area: Signage on level 3F also directs toward a smoking lounge and toilet in that concourse.
The smoking rooms in the domestic area appear to be enclosed cabins with cigarette lighter units (a "Refresh Air Smoking Cabin" branded unit with a digital counter was photographed inside one). At least one room was described as having no chairs and being quite narrow.
After Security (International Terminal)
A January 2025 traveler update confirmed one smoking room in the international terminal, located between Gate 73 and Gate 75, opposite Gate 74. The room is described as having no chairs and being very narrow. The airport map confirms this location on level F2 of the international pier. This is the most current confirmed airside smoking spot for international passengers.
Vaping Rules
China has regulated e-cigarettes under a state monopoly since November 2022. Only tobacco-flavoured vapes are legal; all other flavours are banned. At the airport, vaping is treated the same as smoking: outdoor zones before security, and the designated smoking rooms airside. Do not bring non-Chinese vape products into the country without checking current customs rules.
Transit and Layovers
If you are transiting domestically and have a layover of 90 minutes or more, the domestic smoking rooms on level 3F are accessible without exiting security. For international transits, the smoking room near Gate 74 is your airside option. If you want to smoke outdoors before a long flight, exiting and re-entering security is possible, but factor in queue times at this large terminal.
Bottom Line
Unlike most mainland Chinese airports, KMG has confirmed indoor smoking rooms both in the domestic concourses and the international terminal, so you are not forced outside after security. Head to the Gate 73-75 area for international flights, or follow the 吸烟室 signs on level 3F for domestic gates.
