Smoking policy at Praya, Zainuddin Abdul Madjid International Airport (LOP)
Warnings & Caveats
Vaping (e-cigarettes) is banned throughout Indonesia, including all airport areas. Do not vape inside or outside the terminal. For connecting flights between domestic and international terminals, you may need to exit the terminal to smoke and then clear security again. Allow extra time. The cafe smoking room near Gate 1 may require a minimum purchase (reported at IDR 25,000 in 2023). Confirm on arrival.
LOP is one of the more accommodating airports in Indonesia for smokers, with options both before and after security. Airside smoking rooms exist in the international departures area, so you do not necessarily need to exit and re-enter just to have a cigarette. That said, the situation has shifted over the years and traveler reports from 2023 to 2025 paint a slightly inconsistent picture, so it pays to know all your options before you arrive.
Before Security
Landside, your best bet is simply stepping outside the terminal building. Designated smoking areas are positioned outside the terminal entrances, and these are accessible to anyone, including meeters and greeters, arriving passengers, and departing travelers who have not yet checked in.
Outside the terminal entrances: Open-air designated zones on the landside. No purchase required.
Domestic Arrivals outdoor zone: A traveler update from December 2022 confirmed an open-air smoking zone on the way out of the domestic arrivals area.
The check-in hall on Level 2 (Departures) also lists a smoking area among its facilities according to the official terminal map, so there may be a landside spot inside the departure hall before you pass through security.
After Security
The international departures side has the most confirmed airside options:
Smoking room inside a cafe near Gate 1: As of October 2025, a traveler confirmed a smoking room inside a cafe at Gate 1. The traveler bought a coffee but was unsure whether a purchase is strictly required. A 2023 report from Arda noted a minimum spend of IDR 25,000 (roughly USD 1.50) to use the cafe smoking room, so budget for a drink to be safe.
Smoking area before passport control (upstairs, international departures): Confirmed in October 2025. This is located on the upper level on the way to the international departures terminal, just before passport control, so you can use it without needing to be fully airside.
At least 2 smoking rooms in the departure lounge: An August 2024 report from MCamargo confirmed at least two smoking rooms after the security check in the international departure lounge.
For the domestic departures side, no confirmed airside smoking facilities have been reported. If you are on a domestic flight and need to smoke after security, your options are unclear and you may need to exit the terminal.
Transit and Connecting Flights
If you are connecting through LOP, be aware that the domestic and international airside areas are not connected. For connecting passengers, you may need to exit the terminal entirely, smoke outside, and then re-enter through security for your onward flight. Plan extra time if this applies to you.
Vaping Rules
Vaping is banned throughout Indonesia under national regulations. Do not vape anywhere inside or outside the terminal buildings. This applies equally to e-cigarettes and heated tobacco products.
Bottom Line
Smoke outside before check-in for the simplest experience. If you are flying internationally, there are confirmed smoking rooms airside near Gate 1 and in the departure lounge, though a small cafe purchase may be expected at the Gate 1 room.
