Smoking policy at Philadelphia, Philadelphia International Airport (PHL)

Warnings & Caveats

No smoking or vaping anywhere inside the terminals, restaurants, bars, or gate areas. Stand at least 25 feet from building entrances and air intakes when using outdoor zones. Leaving the secure area for a smoke requires full TSA re-screening; allow 35-50 minutes for the round trip at peak times. International connecting passengers must clear customs, exit to smoke, and re-clear security before their next flight.

Philadelphia International Airport is fully smoke-free indoors. Every smoking area at PHL is outside, on the landside curb before security, and there are zero options once you clear the TSA checkpoint. Vaping is treated identically to cigarettes: outdoor curbside zones only, no exceptions inside the terminals.

Before Security

Each of PHL's seven terminals has at least one designated outdoor smoking zone, marked with signage and ash receptacles near the exit doors. The zones sit on both the upper departures/ticketing level and the lower arrivals/baggage-claim roadway. Specific spots confirmed by the airport's own interactive map include:

  • Terminal A-West (International): Curbside on the departures and arrivals levels. If you've just cleared customs on an international arrival, the arrivals-level zone is the quickest option.

  • Terminal A-East: Curbside on both levels, outside the main entrances.

  • Terminals B and C (American Airlines hub): Outdoor zones along the curb on the upper departures level and the ground-level arrivals roadway. B and C share a landside hall, so use whichever exit is closest.

  • Terminal C/D Walkway (Outside): A separate marked zone near the connector between C and D.

  • Terminals D and E: Curbside zones on both levels at the eastern end of the complex; D and E share a connector.

  • Terminal F (Regional): Ground-level curbside zone near the ground transportation area. Terminal F is the most isolated terminal, reached by shuttle bus or the airside connector, so factor in extra travel time.

Stand at least 25 feet from any building entrance or air intake, as required by PHL's rules.

After Security

There are no smoking rooms, lounges, or any designated areas past the TSA checkpoint at PHL. This has been the case since indoor smoking was banned at the airport in 2007. No paid airline lounge at PHL offers a smoking room or terrace either. Your only option airside is to exit to the curbside zones and re-clear security.

Re-Screening After a Smoke Break

Re-clearing security at a hub this size typically takes 20 to 45 minutes at peak times. The walk from far gates to a curbside zone can add another 15 to 20 minutes each way, so budget roughly 35 to 50 minutes for the full round trip. TSA PreCheck or CLEAR shortens the re-screening portion considerably. For short layovers (under 90 minutes), skipping the smoke break is the safer call.

Vaping Rules

E-cigarettes and vaping devices follow the same rules as traditional cigarettes at PHL. Use them only in the outdoor curbside zones; vaping inside the terminals, at gates, or in restaurants and bars is prohibited.

Transit and Layovers

If you are connecting through PHL on an international itinerary, you must enter the United States, clear customs, exit to a curbside smoking zone, and then re-enter the terminal and go back through security before your next flight. Plan for significant extra time.

Bottom Line

Smoke before you go through security, at the curbside zone for your terminal. Once you're airside, there are no options at all, paid or free.
