Smoking policy at San Diego, San Diego International Airport (SAN)
Warnings & Caveats
Smoking inside any terminal building or past security is strictly prohibited under California state law and airport policy. Violating the smoking policy can result in fines and potential removal from airport property. Smoking must take place at least 20-25 feet from all building entrances, exits, and air vents per California regulations. Connecting passengers who exit to smoke must re-clear TSA security, which can take significant time during busy periods.
San Diego International Airport (SAN) enforces a strict no-smoking policy inside all terminal buildings. The only places you can legally smoke are designated outdoor areas on the ground level (Level 1) outside Terminals 1 and 2, all of which are before security. There are no indoor smoking rooms, no airside smoking areas, and no post-security options of any kind.
Before Security
Smoking is permitted in specific outdoor zones on the curbside level outside both terminals. These spots are positioned near the baggage claim exits and ground transportation areas. Key locations include:
Outside Terminal 1, on the curbside at the east and west ends of the arrivals level
Outside Terminal 2, near the curbside check-in and ground transportation zones on both the east and west sides
Some designated spots near parking areas adjacent to the terminal entrances
All areas are marked with signage and equipped with ashtrays. Under California state law, smoking must occur at least 20-25 feet away from building entrances, exits, and air vents.
After Security
There are no smoking areas anywhere past the TSA security checkpoints at SAN. None of the five lounges in Terminal 2 (Aspire Lounge, Chase Sapphire Lounge by The Club, Delta Sky Club, United Club, or the USO Lounge) offer a smoking room or smoking terrace. The USO Lounge, located across from Terminal 2 outside the secure area on the ground level, does have an outdoor patio where military personnel can smoke, but it is landside and restricted to eligible USO visitors.
Vaping Rules
Vaping and e-cigarette use follow exactly the same rules as traditional cigarettes. Both are strictly prohibited inside any part of the terminal buildings, including gates, restaurants, restrooms, and lounges. Vaping is only permitted in the same outdoor designated zones as cigarette smoking.
Transit and Layovers
If you have a connecting flight and need to smoke, you must exit the secure area entirely, walk to one of the outdoor curbside smoking zones, and then re-clear TSA security before returning to your gate. Security wait times at SAN can be unpredictable, especially during peak morning and evening hours, so budget at least 30-45 minutes for this round trip to be safe. There is no re-entry shortcut for connecting passengers.
Bottom Line
Smoke before you clear security, because once you're airside at SAN, your options are zero. If you're connecting, factor in a full security re-screen before deciding whether a smoke break is worth the time.
