Tianjin Binhai International Airport (TSN) is one of the more smoker-friendly airports in mainland China. Indoor smoking rooms exist both in the domestic and international isolation areas (after security) on the 2nd floor, so you do not need to exit the secure zone for a smoke during a layover. That said, a February 2024 traveler report flagged that some or all post-security smoking areas had been closed due to a local law change, so the situation is in flux and you should be prepared for the possibility that airside rooms are no longer accessible.
Before Security
Landside smoking is straightforward. Designated outdoor smoking zones are located outside the terminal buildings, near the arrivals and departures entrances. These areas are free to use, marked with standard Chinese signage (吸烟区), and accessible to anyone before passing through security.

After Security
Historically, TSN has kept indoor smoking rooms in both the Domestic and International Isolation Areas on the 2nd floor (the departure concourse level). The official airport facilities guide confirms smoking rooms with massage chairs (charged at CNY 1 per minute) in these areas.
However, a February 2024 update from a traveler named Ryan reported that all post-security smoking areas had been closed following a local tobacco-control law. Multiple aggregator sources (as of 2025-2026) still list TSN as having airside indoor rooms, suggesting either a partial closure or a subsequent reopening. The picture is genuinely uncertain right now.
If the rooms are open: look for them in the domestic and international isolation areas on Level 2
If closed: you will need to exit the terminal, smoke at the outdoor zones, and re-clear security

Vaping Rules
China has regulated e-cigarettes under a state monopoly since November 2022. Only tobacco-flavored vapes are legal for sale; flavored vapes are banned. At TSN, vaping is treated the same as smoking: use only in designated smoking areas. Do not vape in the terminal, at gates, in restaurants, or in any non-designated public space.
Transit and Layovers
If the airside smoking rooms are confirmed closed on the day you travel, international transit passengers who need to exit for a smoke will have to pass through immigration, smoke outside, and re-clear security and immigration. This is only practical on layovers of 2-3 hours or more. Domestic connecting passengers face a shorter re-entry process but still need to budget extra time.
Bottom Line
TSN has outdoor smoking landside and historically solid airside indoor rooms, but a 2024 local law change may have closed the post-security facilities. Check the signage when you arrive and allow extra time if you plan to smoke airside.
