Smoking policy at Naples, Naples Capodichino International Airport (NAP)
Warnings & Caveats
All smoking areas after security are permanently closed as of August 2023. Smoking outside designated outdoor areas may result in fines under Italian law. Vaping is likely subject to the same restrictions as smoking indoors under Italian regulations.
Naples Capodichino is a tough airport for smokers. All airside smoking areas have been permanently closed as of mid-2023, leaving outdoor designated zones before security as the only option. If you smoke, plan your last cigarette before you enter the terminal.
Before Security
The only smoking permitted at NAP is in designated outdoor areas located outside the terminal building, accessible before you pass through security. These zones are open-air, marked with signage, and equipped with ashtrays. No specific gate numbers or exact positions are documented in available sources, but look for marked areas near the terminal entrances on the departures level.
After Security
There are no smoking facilities of any kind once you have passed through security. This has been confirmed by multiple independent traveler reports from April and August 2023, and verified again as of April 2026. Previously, glass-walled smoking cabins existed in several gate areas: near gate A9, opposite the Work Eat cafe in area A (gates A17-18), and in the C gate area. All of these have been closed and taped off. The photos from the airport show these cabins sealed with hazard tape and "maximum capacity 4 people" signs still visible, but they are no longer in service.
There are no paid lounges at NAP currently documented as offering a smoking terrace or smoking room, so paying for lounge access will not solve the problem airside.
Transit and Layovers
If you have a connecting flight and need to smoke during a layover, you will need to exit the secure zone, use the outdoor smoking area, and then re-clear security. This is allowed in principle, but factor in extra time, especially during peak summer travel periods when security queues at NAP can be significant. Multiple travelers have flagged this as a real inconvenience.
Vaping Rules
The vaping policy is not explicitly stated by the airport. Italian law broadly prohibits electronic cigarettes in enclosed public spaces on the same basis as tobacco, so it is safest to treat vaping the same as smoking: outside only, before security, in designated areas.
Bottom Line
Smoke before you go through security, because there is nothing available airside. Budget extra time if you plan to exit and re-enter during a layover.
