Smoking policy at Makassar, Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport (UPG)
Warnings & Caveats
Smoking is only permitted in designated areas. Smoking anywhere else inside the terminal is prohibited. Vaping is permitted inside designated smoking rooms but is subject to Indonesia's broader vaping restrictions outside those areas. The positions of free airside smoking rooms can shift as the terminal is rearranged following the 2024 expansion. Check signs or ask staff if you cannot locate one.
Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport in Makassar is one of the more smoker-friendly airports in Indonesia. You can smoke both before and after security, with free enclosed smoking rooms airside and outdoor areas landside near the terminal entrances.
Before Security
Landside smoking is limited to outdoor areas at ground level. Head to the passenger drop-off and pick-up zones at either end of the terminal building, or step outside near the main entrances. There are no indoor smoking rooms before security. Makassar's tropical climate means it is warm and humid year-round (typically around 30°C), so keep your pre-flight smoke brief if the heat bothers you.
Outdoor areas near the main terminal entrances (ground level)

Stay clear of doorways and any no-smoking signage
After Security
Once you clear security into the departure area, you have several options:
Free airside smoking rooms (ruang merokok): Enclosed, ventilated rooms are located in the departure area near the boarding gates and food court. These are free to use and accept both regular cigarettes and e-cigarettes. Signage reads "ruang merokok" in Indonesian. Exact positions can shift as the terminal is rearranged, so check the overhead signs or ask ground staff if you cannot find one.
Concordia Lounge: Sits on the 2nd floor airside, in front of Gate 1, open roughly 05:00 to 21:00. Has a dedicated smoking room. Access requires lounge eligibility (Priority Pass accepted, or paid walk-in).
Blue Sky Premier Lounge: Opened September 2025 on the 2nd floor of the domestic terminal. Has a large dedicated smoking lounge and operates around the clock, making it the best option for early-morning or late-night departures. Access requires lounge eligibility (Priority Pass accepted, or paid walk-in).
Vaping Rules
The free airside smoking rooms are reported to accept e-cigarettes alongside regular cigarettes. However, Indonesia has broader restrictions on vaping, and rules can vary by area. Use vaping devices only inside designated smoking rooms and not in the general terminal.
Transit and Layovers
Because free smoking rooms are available airside, transit passengers do not need to exit the secure zone to smoke. If you have a long layover, the Blue Sky Premier Lounge (open 24 hours) is the most comfortable option, provided you have lounge access.
Bottom Line
UPG is genuinely comfortable for smokers: free ruang merokok rooms are available after security, outdoor spots cover you landside, and two lounges with dedicated smoking rooms add further airside options for Priority Pass holders or those willing to pay walk-in fees.
