Airports Where You Can Smoke After Security: The Complete 2026 List

Few questions stress smokers more before a flight than this one: once I am through security, will I be able to smoke before I board? At most airports in the world the answer is no. Smoking rooms have been closing for years, and many airports now allow smoking only outside the terminal, before you check in. But there are still 178 airports in 67 countries where you can smoke after security, in a smoking room, an outdoor terrace or a lounge.

This is the complete list, built from the SmokingAirports.com database of more than 700 airports. For every airport below we have at least one documented smoking area airside, and each airport links to its full guide with directions, photos and the latest verification date.

Rules change often, so treat this list as a starting point and always follow the signs on the day. We explain how we built the list, and its limits, at the end of the article.

The numbers at a glance

  • 178 airports in 67 countries have at least one smoking area after security.

  • Asia leads with 92 airports, followed by Europe with 73, Africa with 10 and North America with just 3.

  • Another 188 airports have limited airside smoking: one small room, one terminal only, or a paid lounge.

Big hub airports where you can smoke after security

If you are connecting through a major hub, these are the airports where smoking airside is easiest. Each entry lists some of the smoking areas we have documented after security.

A few of these deserve a special mention. Dubai, Doha and Istanbul are the easiest long-haul hubs for smokers, with smoking lounges spread across their concourses. Hong Kong has open-air options such as the Sky Garden near Gate 10. In Europe, Munich, Zurich, Vienna, Milan Malpensa, Rome Fiumicino and Athens all have smoking areas after security, which makes them good connection points compared with smoke-free hubs such as Amsterdam.

Big airports where you cannot smoke after security

Just as useful is knowing where you cannot smoke once you are airside, so you can plan your last cigarette before security.

At these hubs airside smoking is limited, for example to one terminal, one small room or a paid lounge:

A note on London Heathrow

Heathrow is the one big airport where the information conflicts. Heathrow's official website says smoking is not allowed anywhere after security. However, travellers have reported a signposted outdoor smoking area in Terminal 2, near Gate A1, as recently as early 2026, and we list it on our London Heathrow Airport guide. If you are flying from Heathrow, do not count on it: smoke before security if you can, and treat the Terminal 2 area as a possible bonus.

Tips for smoking after security

  • Check your gate area, not just the airport. Many airports have smoking rooms in only one terminal or one concourse. Open the airport guide and check which gates are close to a smoking area.

  • Allow time. Smoking rooms can be a long walk from your gate, and at busy times there can be a queue to get in.

  • Look for the lounge option. At several airports the only airside place to smoke is inside a lounge. Some accept walk-in guests for a fee; others need a business class ticket or a lounge membership.

  • Bring a lighter only if it is allowed. Most airlines allow one lighter on your person, but rules differ, and many smoking rooms have a fixed lighter on the wall.

  • Vaping follows different rules. Some countries ban e-cigarettes outright, including Thailand and Singapore. A smoking room does not make vaping legal where it is banned.

  • Follow the signs on the day. Smoking areas close for renovation or disappear with new terminals. If a sign says no smoking, it overrides any guide, including ours.

Can you smoke after security at airports in the United States?

Rarely. Most US airports are smoke-free inside the terminal. Our database has only 1 US airport with a documented smoking area after security: Tampa International Airport.

Which European airports allow smoking after security?

We list 73 European airports with smoking after security. Among the largest are Munich, Zurich, Vienna, Paris Charles de Gaulle, Rome Fiumicino, Milan Malpensa, Barcelona, Athens, Helsinki and Stockholm Arlanda. Germany has the most, with 14 airports, followed by Spain with 7, and the United Kingdom and Italy with 6 each.

Can I leave the secure area to smoke and come back?

At some airports you can, but you will have to go through security again, and at international departures possibly through passport control as well. Transit passengers usually cannot leave the secure area without entering the country. Check the airport guide before you rely on it.

Are smoking lounges free?

Most airport smoking rooms are free. Some airports only allow smoking inside a lounge, which may charge a walk-in fee or require a qualifying ticket or membership.

How we built this list

This list comes from the SmokingAirports.com airport database, which covers more than 700 airports. An airport appears here only when two separate parts of our data agree: its smoking policy says smoking is allowed after security, and at least one specific smoking area after security is documented for it. Airports where only limited smoking is possible after security (188 of them) are not in the main list.

We research each airport using official airport sources, terminal maps and traveller reports, and every airport page shows when it was last verified. Even so, smoking areas change without notice. If you find that a smoking area on this list has closed or moved, please use the correction form on the airport page so we can update it for the next traveller.
